Tsinghua–BP Signing Ceremony for Phase III Collaboration

The annual meeting of the advisory committee for the Tsinghua – BP collaboration, and the signing ceremony for the 3rd phase collaboration was held on Jan. 12, 2016 at the Tsinghua – BP Research Center for Clean Energy. David Eyton, CTO of BP and member of the British Royal Academy of Engineering, and Prof. Jiang Shengyao, Vice President of Tsinghua University, signed the agreement for the phase III collaboration. According to the agreement, during the 3rd collaboration phase (2016 ~ 2020) the center will concentrate its research on the field of low-carbon electricity. Board members, including Academician Ni Weidou, Prof. He Jiankun, Mr. Yang Hengming, President of BP China, Dr. Angelo Amorelli, BP’s VP of Technology, Dr. Ma Jun, Director of Overseas R&D Management Office of Tsinghua University, Ms. Anna-Marie Greenaway, BP’s Director of College Relations, Mr. Bai Changbo, Vice President of BP China, and Ms. Xia Xueying, BP China’s Director of Cooperative Partner Relations, attended the meeting and signing ceremony. The center’s director, Prof. Li Zheng, chaired the meeting.
 
During the advisory committee meeting, Vice President Jiang Shengyao reviewed cooperation between Tsinghua and BP since 2001, and expressed his gratitude for BP’s long term support for the university as well as the center, and spoke highly of the center’s research results. Prof. Li Zheng made a report to the committee on the center’s research and results under the framework of the Tsinghua – BP phase II collaboration over the last 5 years. In his report he summarized the center’s progress in fields such as China’s macro energy system strategy, power industry planning, and transportation energy, and looked forward to the success of the research programs in the 3rd cooperation phase. The committee commended the center for its various achievements, emphasizing that these results will guide and promote China’s macro energy strategy and policy making in areas such as low-carbon electricity. The committee also expressed their hope that the two parties will achieve greater progress under the framework of the 3rd cooperation phase.

BP and Tsinghua University began to cooperate in 2001, followed by the  establishment of the Tsinghua – BP Research Center for Clean Energy in 2003, which was inaugurated by the then British PM, Tony Blair, and the then Tsinghua President, Gu Binglin. Affiliated to Department of Thermal Engineering, the center is focused on research on macro energy strategy, and modeling, simulation and optimization of energy systems.
