On Nov. 8th, Brad Smith, General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Microsoft, visited Tsinghua University and gave a speech titled “Creating Opportunity through Technology: A Case Study of Microsoft and the US Technology Sector as a Model for Growth through Innovation” at the Tsinghua Forum.
Before the speech, Tsinghua Vice President, Xie Weihe welcomed Mr. Smith on behalf of Tsinghua University and made a brief introduction on the recent developments of R&D, international collaboration and talent training at Tsinghua University. He said that Mr. Bill Gates is an old friend of Tsinghua, there has always been a good cooperative relationship between Tsinghua and Microsoft. He hopes that cooperation could be deepened and the areas of collaboration could be expanded. Mr. Smith said, Microsoft has been attached great importance to the collaboration with Tsinghua, and he hoped that both sides could continue keeping close partnership and exploring new forms of cooperation in the future.

After the meeting, Mr. Smith gave his speech on technological development and innovation. He shared with the viewers the pioneering story and innovative measures of Microsoft, talked about the significance of innovation for the development of technology and the company, and how technological innovation affects our life. He also talked about how to cope with to global challenges and the issue of training of young talents. After the speech, Mr. Smith had a stimulating discussion with students of Tsinghua University.
In addition, Mr. Smith also met with professors and researchers specialized in intellectual property from the School of Law, the School of Public Policy and Management of Tsinghua University, exchanged his ideas on the issue of protection and promotion of intellectual property.
Mr. Brad Smith is the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Microsoft, head of the Legal and Corporate Affairs. He is in charge of all Microsoft’s legal affairs, governmental relationship, and all kinds of affairs related with government, business world and community. He graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude, and received his doctoral degree in law from Columbia University.
