201103-Mr. Ichiro Tai Visited Tsinghua and Gave Speech

Dec.2, 2010, Mr. Ichiro Tai, Vice President of Toshiba, Guest Professor of Tsinghua University, paid a visit to Tsinghua and gave a speech entitled “The Development Blueprint of the Future Low-Carbon Society”.

Mr. Ichiro Tai firstly introduced the history and current situations of Toshiba, and then elaborated on “supremely precious energy” and “the low-carbon technology and market of Toshiba”. In the coming ten years, the nenergy demand in Asia would increase noticeably, but the power generation by petrochemistry, though stable, would result in a more severe demand in the emission reduction of carbon dioxide. Only 0.025% of the total energy the earth receives would satisfy all current energetic needs. Mr. Ichiro Tai compared the advantages and difficulties of the energy generation through solar, wind, wave and tidal power, pointing out that there is a huge potential in the use of cosmic energy, but problems remain in the large-scale distribution as well as the stability of the energy generation. The future trend is to optimally combine nuclear power, thermal power with emission reduction techniques, and cosmic powers. Mr. Ichiro Tai also introduced Toshiba’s target: 750,000,000 t. of emssion reduction by 2020 through technological innovation. The speech was chaired by Prof. Cai Ningsheng from the Department of Thermal Engineering, Tsinghua University. After the speech, Mr. Ichiro Tai answered questions from the audience, communicating with Tsinghua students issues such as academics and life planning. This event is held by the academic board of the university and is one of the 100 academic events for the Centenary Celebration of the university.

Before the speech, Mr. Ichiro Tai attended the awarding ceremony of the 2009-2010 Tsinghua Fellow – Toshiba Fellowship.
