R&D projects fall into two categories: commissioned projects and joint research projects.

 

For commissioned projects university researchers conduct basic or applied research to meet the specific objectives defined by the company. The company provides all direct costs plus the relevant project overhead costs.

 

For joint research projects researchers from the university and the company jointly conduct the required research efforts. Thre are several ways in which such projects can be organized. The first is that Tsinghua provides researchers, equipments and premises, and the company provides research funds and researchers; the second is that Tsinghua provides only researchers and the company provides all other required support including research funds, equipments and premises; the third is that Tsinghua and the company conduct independent but coordinated research, each with its researchers, research funds, equipments and premises according to the arrangement and schedule of the project agreed by both parties.
